We bought my son a 2006 s40 about a year ago. He hasn’t had any problems with the car at all until 2 weeks ago. He was driving on the freeway (70mph) and speed dropped to 35mph. We had it towed to a shop, and they found a code that said the pedal position sensor was bad. He cleaned it, and everything was fine. A week later, car started running poorly. Felt like it was misfiring and ran very rough. Back to the shop, and the mechanic spent about a week on it. He determined fuel pump was bad. Only 2psi at the fuel rail. He replaced that, But car still wouldn’t start. He then said the battery was bad, and that piston 3 & 5 were misfiring. He replaced the ignition coils on those cylinders and it started. He did some test runs and determined it was all fixed.
no longer then 6 hours, car runs like crap again. Mechanic said that the other coils need to be replaced. Still no luck.
ive spent $1300, replaced fuel pump, all coils, fuel pressure regulator, and still nothing.
to add to the problem, it’s now throwing check engine, service engine urgent, the valet flashes on/off. When you try to start the car, the fuel door opens, and the trunk lid pops.
I bought a Volvo scanner and its registering the following codes:
CEM-1a41
CEM-3f93
DDM-e001
CEM-de43
ECM-950c
When you have a lot of seemingly unconnected problems popping up at the same time, it's usually an electrical thing. In this case, I'd make sure that the battery isn't low (as in a bad alternator). Next, I'd suspect either a bad ground, or possibly a bad module (maybe something got wet?).
I'd also have some reservations about the mechanic you're using - the odds of all those spark coils failing are pretty similar to being struck by lightning and a meteor simultaneously. It's always possible that he (assuming it's a guy) is the cause of the additional problems (not every tech knows / understands Volvos).
