Default I still cannot figure it out... maybe the whole story will help

Hi:

Ihave a Volvo S40 (2000)and lately I have been having trouble starting it. It takes about 5 seconds to start and for about a minute it seems is misfiring. Then it runs pretty smooth. I took the car to AutoZone and the computer showed a P0303. I took it to the mechanic and the coil and fuel injector sensor was changed. The light came back in a matter of hours and I took it back to the mechanic. The throttle body was cleaned. The same problem was showing and he checked the pressure of the fuel line and he mentioned it was low. He said the fuel pump needs to be changed. The car runs pretty smooth it just takes times to start and performance is not the best for the first few minutes. I have seen the posts about the fuel pressure regulator. I am not sure what to do. It is already $300 bucks and all the symptoms and computer codes are the same. How can I check if the pressure regulator is the problem? It smells like gas while starting the car. In a previous post somebody talked about the extended warranty for the fuel pump but it does not apply to S40 (although I am going to call Volvo tomorrow). It seems the problem should not be that complicated but I am not sure where should I start. Can a damaged fuel pump cause a misfire in cylinder #3? Spark plugs where changed like 20k ago.
