Default 1998 S40 loosing power

Hi there,
I have recently purchased a 1998 S40. On the way home from the dealers it suddenly lost power, the engine remained turning, but pressing the throttle pedal had no response. I had to get the car towed back the dealer. The dealers mechanic could not find a problem but after it lost power again on the way home he relpaced the fuel pump. I got the car home but on another trip it lost power again. The first two times it lost power it was a hot day, the time I got it back home it was cool- so temperature may play a part?
Does anyone know what the problem might be? Could it be the drive by wire throttle of the fuel pressure regulator? Any sugestions would be very muych appreciated.
Cheers

This would be a UK car? Could you tell us a little more about the car like engine size and turbo or non-turbo, manual or auto, etc. Also, you are saying the engine quits but was still rotating because the car was in gear (assuming manual transmission)?

Hello mate,

I assume your S40 is European model (most likely the UK), correct? The S40 did not come out until the 2000 model in the US.

I just checked the recalls for US models and no recall was found on engine control. I would start by checking to see if there is a fault code stored in the ECU. If there is no fault code, then the problem could be as simple as neglected tune-up. I distantly remember that some people here have had trouble with their ignition coils (the secondary coils sitting on top of each spark plug).

Or wait till other S40 drivers/Moderator Tech kicks in.

Cheers,

JPN

I have one XC90 V8 -2006 with the same problem.
My car loose power when the engine is hot and over 3500 RPM.
No error on the computer, no check engine light.
The Volvoservice don`t find any error.
Last week I buy one DashHawk computer whogive Error P0089 = Fuel presure regulator 1 Performance.
Is one temporary error and are not logged on the car computer. I keep my DashHawk connected all the time to can read the error.
Now I want to buy one fuel presure regulator and I don`t know from where.

I bought a FPR from the local Volvo dealer because the internet price plus shipping was about the same as the dealer price plus tax.

Some helpful Volvo sites: http://www.fcpgroton.com/ and http://www.ipdusa.com/
There are others, maybe a Google search for Volvo parts?
