Default 2000 s40 exhaust

i currently have a rear muffler delete and would like to get a full 2.5'' exhaust. I was originally planning to get the 2nd cat and mid muffler deleted, keep both resonators, and install my $45 Vibrant clone Ebay muffler on the end of the exhaust. Ive taken my car to 2 different local exhaust shops and both told me they couldn't remove my second cat because it's illegal. I was quoted $300(don't have that much to spend) for a full cat-back with my eBay muffler installed, and around $120 to delete the mid muffler and install the eBay muffler. Now what should i do? Will i notice a significant power gain if i leave the 2nd cat on? Or should i keep searching for somebody who will cut it out for me. I don't want to cut out the 2nd cat if it will throw a Check engine light though, but im not worried about inspection/emissions.

A significant power gain? From a cat delete and eBay muffler? Call me a pessimist but I think you should go with the lowest cost solution.

Ive heard of other people getting there second cat and mid muffler cut out for a decent power gain. I'm just wondering if it's worth getting it removed and if it will throw a C.E.L? I don't see where my budget really comes into that, but thanks for the financial advice.

Yes the gain is pretty good by deleting the 2nd CAT and the mid muffler. Its been dyno proved that the gain is 18WHP.Tell the shop that by law you are required to have a CAT but not two.The first CAT is in the engine bay and that is the only one being monitored. If still dont wanna do it for you then cut them out yourself then go back saying you need them to fix a straight pipe in there.

OK, thank you for the information. Im in Pennsylvania, im not sure if that has anything to do with why they wont do it. I tried to tell them that they could cut it out since i have two but they wouldn't listen. I guess ill have to either do what you suggested and cut it out myself and then bring it to them, or find a small shop that doesn't care. But it definitely wont throw a C.E.L. since it doesn't have a sensor, right?

18 whp gain? More than I would have thought. My comment was to spend the least amount so that if the gain was small you wouldn't be too disappointed. Nothing worse than spending a ton of money and feeling ripped off.

No sensor on the 2nd cat, only the one right below the turbo.

Harbor Freight sells a sawzall for $30 that will cut it out fast. Or just grab a hack saw and have at it! Think of it as exercise....
