Custom 2000 S40 exhaust
I have heard that apparently it is cheaper to have a catback exhaust for a 2000 S40 1.9T custom fabricated. Is this true? I have been all over the internet in search of a catback system at a reasonable price, but have only found one, which is over my price range.
If this is true does anyone know a good custom fabricator with good prices in the midwest, or prepared to ship a system to me? I do not really care about any performance gain, I am more concerned with the sound it may provide.
Thanks!!

yes its very true...most of the well known companies that offer downpipes and catback systems for our s40's ask an astronomical price...what most guys will tell you is if you have a well known exhaust shop that you trust where you live, go to them and have something made up, then you would just have to buy the cat and muffler and whatever the labor cost would be...
Does anyone have the estimated labor cost of a custom job like the above? Also how much would a decent muffler and cat cost.
As I said before, I'm mostly interested in the sound of it rather than the performance gain.
Thanks!

If I want a catbackthat means I have to replace every thing BEHIND the catalytic converter right? So I don't need to buy a new catalytic converter, do I? Just the pipes + muffler. Is there any other ways to get a good sound also?
If anyone has any suggestions or cantell me the setup on their own car, it would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

a catback system on your s40 will consist of a new cat and new muffler...your downpipe leads to your first cat and then there is a second cat before the muffler....you want a straight flowing muffler for example a magnaflo muffler...the muffler shouldnt be more than a couple hundred bucks...a custom dp should be around 200-600 depending on the quality...you can have a custom exhaust done for under 1000, where if you went to a store to order a downpipe and catback your talking 1500+ bucks...
So is there a setup you recommend mcjuij1?
Could I even just fit a new magnaflow muffler on and get the sound I am looking for?
I am new to this so forgive me if that is stupid?
Thanks!

What I recommend for sound is a new muffler. If you want a nice sound and performance, get yourself a 2.5inch catback exhaust with a new muffler. The downpipe upgrade is really only recommended if 1) you have the means of doing it and 2) your doing a turbo upgrade. But if you want a simple mod done like a louder exhaust, then go to an exhaust shop with a new muffler and have them take the old one out and weld the new one on...
Any idea on how much the above would cost just for labor at a decent shop? I know about how much a decent new muffler would cost.
What is the stock fitting size of the pipe the muffler attaches to? (in other words, the inlet size is what)
And is there a size limit under the car for width of the new muffler without scraping the ground on speed bumps and the like?
Would something like this work?- http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...in&id=7616
Or this- http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...in&id=7609
Thanks a lotfor your help!!

I cant give you estimates as every area varies...that you'll have to call for...but either of those mufflers look like they could work...the most important thing with a muffler as i said before is you want it to be a straight flow through muffler to benefit your turbo...the piping should be either 2.25in or 2.5in running to your muffler, that I am not sure of, you would have to look around...
