Default 2000 s40 keeps dying out

when we start the car, it starts up at 1000 rpm and the car runs fine. but most of the time, and it starts at 500 rpm, when you try to push the gas it causes the car to die and it sounds like its like its starving for gas and it will just die. if i keep turning the car off and trying it again, after about 5 to 10 times it will work. but i need your help on what the problem is. thanks in advance.

Check engine light on?

Does it really overheat or the Guage just says it is?

If the light is on when you drive then there should be codes.
It could me a ton of things.
But if you could get it to set codes that would really help.

Try unplugging the Mass Flow sensor and see if it starts and idles. (It will set codes for it).
Make sure you have fuel pressure.
Make sure you have no big Vaccum leaks.
Make sure you have good spark.

thanks im gonna try all of these things, i told my friend about it and he said it might be that the MAF sensor is clogged or something to that extent, do you think this could be possible?

The Cam sensor might be going bad.
Or has the timing belt been changed lately?
