Default 2000 s40 will not turn over when engine is warm.

My 2000 s40 always starts right up no problems when the engine is cold, but if I drive it then leave for just a short while it won't even crank at all till the engine cools down a bit. I'll wait 10-20 minutes and it will start with ease. I know the battery and alternator are good, so I don't think it's a low voltage problem, And I replaced the fuel pressure regulator last winter. Seems to me like a sensor or computer issue, but I have no idea where to start, does anyone know what could be causing this? Any and all help is much appreciated.

Sounds like a bad starter. When it gets heat soaked it fails. Try making a temporary heat shield to see if anything changes. Maybe a small piece of aluminum over the starter to block some heat. Careful of touching the battery hot wire. That will cause a few sparks.
(Please do not buy a new starter on my guess)

Thanks I will look into that, that could be it. From memory it seems the starter is shielded pretty well though, and it seems to crank smoothly when it does crank, not like any starter failure I've experienced before, although last year when I had a bad fuel pressure regulator the start had to crank for about 6 seconds before it would start, and I know that puts a lot of stress on it, so maybe indeed the starter is to blame. I will investigate later and post back. Thanks.

The problem seems electrical, an it's not the starter motor for sure, that part works fine, could it be the starter solenoid? Or some kind of electronic breaker or something to do with the ignition switch possibly? Any and all help is much appriciated!

You should check the starter and solenoid for power when you try to start it.

Ok I'll do that, so I'm thinking here, if there is no power at the starter there is an issue with the connection to the battery, because I know my battery is good and strong, if there is power to the solenoid and it still won't start it is a bad solenoid but if there is no power to the solenoid when I try to start it, what would that mean?

I know my battery cables are very clean and tight, but I will check the connections at the starter and maybe the main fuse is loose or something. I'll just do a thorough check of the power and ignition wiring.

Default 2000 s40 will not turn over when engine is warm

2000 s40 will not turn over when engine is warm. Ive had the battery checked, its good, Ive replaced the starter, so its good. When I turn the key to start, all dash lights come on, but the starter doesnt do squat. Could it be the ignition switch, or ignition immobilizer?

Besides the ignition switch it could be the neutral safety switch on the trans. When it acts up try putting the car in neutral instead of park then try starting it.
