2000 Volvo S40 - Instrument cluster
Out of the blue the instrument cluster stopped working - all of it
no guages (no needles move) - no numbers displayed at bottom
Started checking fuses under the dash and under the hood
Any suggestions???

There are two electrical connectors on the back. Maybe one has come loose? The connectors are mounted on a slider. You line them up with the holes in the cluster and push the cluster until you hear them click into place. They could come loose over time.
Im back again - The last time around it ended up being the Electronic Control Module - (used / installed - $450).
This time a headlight went out - I pulled the battery to change - when I re-assembled - the cluster is out (this car is starting to kill me.....)
Now Im back again - cluster went out less than 2 years later.
Back to checking fuses - I see on eBay that if it ends up being the cluster - you can get it rebuilt for $150
Any other ideas before I run to the shop?????????????

My guess would would be the ECM.
Try disconnecting the battery terminals again and join them together for say 15 minutes.
It resets the ECM assuming its not stuffed itself.
Reconnect battery and hopefully all okay????
