2001 S40 engine "dead"
So my sister has a 2001 S40 with 100,000 miles on it, and the other day it just wouldn't start. I don't think it ever happened before so she wasn't really sure what the problem was. After taking it to a Volvo mechanic he says he doesn't know what it is, but she needs a new engine (sounds fishy to me). $4500 for the new engine alone, without labor.
I wanted to know if this has been a common problem with the S40's, or if there might be a known issue that the mechanic could have overlooked. Hopefully, I can help save her the money and trouble of getting the engine replaced. If not maybe I can source a used or refurb engine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Jason

I would say you need to get more info and maybe try a different mechanic. Me thinks this guy has a club hidden behind his back and he thinks your sister is a baby seal. I am curious to hear more. The I don't know whats wrond followed by you need a new engine set off my BS detector.
