2001 s40 loosing time when eng shut off
I have 3 problems that I'm thinking are related.
1: every time I shut off eng the MPG dash time resets to 0
2: near every time I shut off eng DSA light comes on then car is hard to start.
3: check eng light comes on when DSA lite comes on. I have to disconnect battery and clear codes via OBDII codes are camshaft crankshaft sensors.
timing belt, tensioner and both sensors have been replaced.
All fuses have been replaced.
HELP!!!

Hey man, I know its been about 6 months since you posted this, but I'm fairly new here. Are you still having the issue with the DSA/Check Eng. combination? Or have you gotten the issue resolved? I'm experiencing a similar issue but it only happens once I have gotten my car up to operating temperature. It usually starts but cranks longer than usual. Throws a Crank pos. sensor code as well. I suspect the vvt system but I have not replaced the control solenoid just yet.

Ok, Well yesterday on my lunch break at work I pulled the vvt solenoid off and borrowed the work truck to go over to brentwood volvo. I replaced the solenoid and gasket while I had the cover off I checked the vvt gear actuator, it looked like it was brand new. The previous owner had brentwood volvo do the timing belt at 105k so I imagine it was leaking and they replaced it at the same time. While I was at it I replaced my spark plugs too, since I was having a cylinder 4 misfire at wide open throttle and a cylinder 3 misfire at startup. Anyway, I think that fixed it cuz the car started hot like 5 times in a row last night. The reason I suspected the vvt system is because the crank position sensor, really only reads engine rpm and if it had failed the tach wouldn't work properly. I would guess you have the same issue, if the vvt (variable valve timing) isn't working properly then it could have the cam timing adjusted to the wrong position and that would throw a cam sensor code since the position of the cam is out of the ecu parameters that determine its appropriate location. I will check back after I put some miles on the car to confirm the issue hasn't returned (heading to the lake for 4th of July). Hope this helped.

Well, I put about 500 miles on my car since Wednesday. I have not had a single issue yet, the car fires up right away hot or cold. Runs smooth, I think it's safe to say I solved the problem. Be sure to check your vvt gear on the cam, mine looked like brand new so I left it alone. Hope you get it fixed as well.
