RE: 2002 S40 will not idle
Hi OHVolvo,
The MAF sensor is usually situated near the air filter element and can easily be changed by yourself. Before you pay silly amount of money replacing it, just unclip the electrical connector and re-sit it back into position, be careful though not to damage any of the conponents. It might change something you never know!!??!! If a garage has said its the MAF sensor try swapping it with someone that has the same type (If that's an available option to you?) just to make sure. Unfortunately when these things are on the way out they tend to pack up completely a lot of complex things inside that you just can't repair (DIY). Always start with the cheapest option, by all means change the fuel filters etc. it certainly won't do it any harm.
Hope this helps, keep everyone informed of the situation.

A couple of things will cause that code besides the MAF and MAP sensor. Look really closely at the hoses from the engine to the intercooler and to the turbo.
Also there is a hose that goes from the engine in the front to the intercooler. If it breaks it will not allow it to idle and throw the code for the MAF.

I checked all lines and no leaks. I took the car to another auto parts store and it had the following codes: Coolant temp sensor, cad converter sensor, and MAF sensor. Temporary fix: Adjusted throttle linkage so we can drive. Earliest Volvo can check out the car is next Friday.
Will update next Friday.
