My 2003 Volvo s40 starts hard. It takes 7-8 cranks to start up but once started it runs perfectly. It always starts. If I shut off and start up again in a short period of time it fires right. It also sometimes (rarely) starts up good on its own after sitting for hours. I have replaced the fuel filter and the spark plugs. I have no check engine code. My guess is fuel pressure regulator but don't want to invest the money if that is not it. I don't see fuel leaking out of the regulator. Could it still be the problem or could it be something else? The timing belt or pulleys?????? I have no idea. Please help.

Usually hard cold starts are due to a tired ECT. If you think it might be from low fuel pressure, you can bump the starter, wait 5 seconds for the pump to prime the system, then try to start it.
