Default 2004 s40 5 cyl anti-skid lock needs service

My 2004 s40 5cyl is telling me the anti skid lock needs service. And when i shut off car I cant get my key out and it wont restart. It happened 2 days ago and after a few hours the car started and the message was gone. Well it happened again this morning. What is the message about and how expensive is it to fix? Do I have to take it to the dealer to fix it?

That seems to be more of an issue with Volvos when It's really cold out, and I'm betting that has more to do with salt, ice, rust and slush than temperature. I've read about the ABS sensors getting covered in ice and slush. One post suggested putting the car in reverse, getting up to a "reasonable speed" and hitting the brakes (which they claimed should clear the sensors). I don't know about that, but it does make sense that if you've been driving in nasty winter conditions - particularly with plenty of wet, salty glop on the roads, it could be that your poor ABS sensors are getting confused.

Others who mentioned that error ended up having to have the dealer replace an expensive computer.

I'm not sure about the key getting stuck / car won't start thing(s) though... I'm just not familiar with how the cars are programmed to react when they think they have an ABS fault. Might be normal and part of the same issue - or not. Hopefully the problem won't disable your vehicle WHILE DRIVING (that would be bad). ;-)

I guess if it was my car, I'd probably suffer the hassles of taking it to a car wash, and make sure I sprayed up around the hubs / axles / wheels to see if that made a (cheap and easy!) difference.

when you have trouble gettting the key out check if your shifter button has popped out or is still depressed. You may need to move it down to D and back up to Park a few times. You can also spray some lubricant around the button although sometimes the shift lock button mechanism can break and needs to be replaced (see vids on Youtube)

Also a symptom when the voltage is low. How is your battery? Alternator charging?
