2004 s40 volvo
My Volvo has had a start button added sometime in the past. Now when I turn key on everything comes on but pushing button car won’t start. If someone rocks car for me it will start.
Any ideas?

Do you have an automatic or manual? When you say rock the car, do you mean in gear or just moving the chassis on the springs? Does the key allow you to turn to position 3 (which is what is supposed to engage the starter)? Since somebody messed with the factory wiring to install a start button, I'd suspect you have a wiring issue - either with the start button wiring or the ignition switch. I'm wondering why somebody would add a start button - which would either be to make the car "cool" like a race car or they bypassed a faulty ignition switch. I'll go with the latter and suggest you should just fix the ignition switch and revert back to stock wiring by removing the switch and properly splice the wire.
best to check out wiring before replacing $ parts and hoping for the best. If you suspect the starter, check if you are getting voltage to the starter when you press the start button.
100% always check firts before replacing parts , a multimeter is cheap , parts are not , , rocking a car seems like a bad connection somewhere , certainly not the starter, probably a bad earth with that aftemarket starter
Check the terminal connection on the starter too. That can eventually build up corrosion and bother the connection. Pull it off, clean the contact, apply Di-electric grease, reattach.
This connection is responsible for the main power, with a bad connection here, starter will do nothing when the key is turned.
