Default 2006 S40 2.4i

hey, new to the forum...and thought you guys could help me out. I have a '06 S40 2.4i and apparently my car burned through all the oil and I was driving with no oil in the car. I was told my engine is shot. The thing is, that the car is driveable, makes no noticeable noise until I reach 2500 rpm, then it makes a chattering sound. I put oil in it and it idles quietly as if it was a new car. I know something is wrong, but I'm being told I need a new engine and that the one I have won't last much more. If you were sitting in the car next to me you would never know that it was suggested I need a new engine. Is there a chance the engine is ok, or is it crap because of the no oil thing?

How the heck does a car burn through Mobil 1 synthetic and the cars safeguards not notice? No check engine, oil pressure...nothing??

Wait a sec. You did not have a low oil pressure light? Who told you that the engine had no oil? How much oil did you put in it?

If the engine is damaged it can show it in many ways. Knocking, excessive smoking, seized up. My neighbor's Volvo 240 had the oil pump pressure spring stick open causing low oil pressure. Low oil flow caused the cam to seize when the aluminum bearing cap welded itself to the steel cam. This broke the timing belt leaving them stranded on the side of the road. If you don't have it, get AAA or similar towing insurance just in case.

yeah, I was told that the car's engine was shot. I have no idea what happened to the oil. It still runs, doesn't knock at idle. However, it does clack at throttle around 2500 rpms, and even then it's not incredibly loud. 2 opinions said that it's a matter of time before the car blows the engine. I know there is something wrong, but a new engine?? I always thought if the engine was a goner then it would be VERY noticeable! It drives great....but like I said there is a clatter from 2k-2.5k.

If it's toast it will show up pretty soon. Let's see, keep driving normally and see what happens, trade it to a dealer for a newer one, or (shudder) sell it to an unsuspecting buyer. I hope you don't choose 3.

nah... I wouldn't sell it to somebody...not my style. It drives fine, idles fine, so it's hard for me to just trade it in off of someones word. I'm getting it checked from a 3rd shop. Its a high end performance shop. They deal with porsche, audi, ferrari etc...No one has been in my car and suspected anything, unless I told them. NA even then they are like...huh???
