Default 2006 Volvo s40 2.4i Turbo

Hey, first time poster to this forum. Like the title says I was hoping to turbo my 2006 volvo 240 2.4i. I have looked at other forums and posts but nothing has come up. I have found a turbo kit on ebay that says it will fit the car, Universal T3 T4 T04E Hybrid Turbo Kit Turbo Starter Kit Stage 1 Turbo Timer FPR | eBay . Being a turbo from ebay, I know that it wont be very reliable and im just hoping to get some time with it while it runs properly. I want to know if this turbo will actually fit in the car and if its a good idea to install one. I know that I will need to purchase a manifold separately as well as upgrade some parts and tune the car. Thanks.

when you say "fit" do you mean mechanically or to fit with the air/fuel delivery system?

You can find an exhaust manifold at a salvage yard from almost any 5 cylinder Volvo turbo which use the Mitsubishi turbos (TD04s) - the turbo in the kit is a Garrett so you'd need to research to make sure the flange matches the manifold. Its likely that you'll need to custom weld a downpipe but that shouldn't prove too difficult if you start with the downpipe/cat from a S40 T5. It looks like the kit has the plumbing to get the air to the intake but there's no information about how the ECU controls the boost... It seems to me the set up simply runs boost to the max on the waste gate (which is why they note a 7 PSI spring to start). However, you have no controls from the ECU so its not likely you'll be able to keep from getting a check engine light, overheating, and melting the odd piston head even while running 93+ octane. Also, the 2.4i block has a higher compression and is less stout (rods etc) than the turbo block so reliability is going to be greatly compromised. My personal opinion is that unless you're looking to do this as a project car, a more sensible approach would be to sell the 2.4i and buy a T5 and then do a turbo/ecu/downpipe to get a reliable 300+ hp, or find a T5 donor car and do the engine swap/tune that way.

I mean fit mechanically, ive seen a lot of people that when installing the turbo parts have to take out parts such as the AC. Also I think your right in that the best approach would be to get a T5 engine and swap it into the car. I just don't know the level of difficulty that would be and if anyone has done it before.

Universal turbo kit = trouble and then some. If you have the tools and the space then you could fab the parts needed but you are talking about allot of work. The ECU would need to be reprogrammed and I have only heard of one company doing that. This is from experience with placing a T3 turbo in a 1986 Pontiac Fiero. I'm going on 10 years wrenching on that car. (It's my hobby car) IMHO I'd say save your money for a factory turbo car. I have a 2005 S40 T5 all-wheel drive and it's a very nice car. I'd recommend one to anyone looking for just a bit of boost.
