2006 Volvo s40
two common causes: 1) the shifter button is stuck slighting inward so its not releasing the key - wiggle the shifter and pull on the button to make it fully pop out should allow the key to release . If the button is not cracked, you can spray some lubricant in there to help let it pop back out normally 2) the steering wheel is slightly cocked and its kickback is pressing on the steering lock. Pulling the steering wheel slightly will relieve the tension. My bet is its the shifter button.
I checked the shifter button I should have added the other night the battery was dead and before I could charge it my wife put the key in and turned it after that it’s been giving me problems it came out last night and I took it out tonight and the key is stuck again
I thought maybe Volvo required programming to replace an ignition switch (since they do for the steering column lock module!!!) but it appears they don't. Hooray!
It looks like swapping out the ignition switch is "interesting"...
