2006 Volvo s40. Went out to dinner! Key would not come out of ignition???? I can start the car. Drive it. When I try to turn it off I can't take the key out?? FYI.. the remote entry is not working on my set of keys as well as my spare???? Please help? How can I get my keys out???? Thanks!

Auto or manual?

Is the button on the shifter stuck in? That was why mine did that.
Try to wiggle it around. When you get it unstuck, spray some WD40 in the button.

 

yeah most likely it is your shifter. The button on my shifter had a crack once that caused the same issue.

From what I know, the car will not let you lock it, if it knows there's a key in the ignition.

We all know how safety related the Swedish are!!!

 

This happened to me... a while back... I had just pulled in after like a long day of just running errands and it was like 10:30 PM... long story short, when I pulled in the garage, i turned the car off and tried to pull the key out. It wouldn't budge. I totally got scared and like ran to the internet to research the problem. A lot of what people were saying made sense, but it wasn't what was wrong w/ my car.

I took it to the dealership the next morning, turns out there was a problem with my ignition... they replaced it free of charge. My S40 is still under warranty.... IDK about yours.
