2007 S40i Transmission Saga
I mistakenly posted this in the New Member section. My bad.
Don't really want to re-explain the whole thing, so, long story, short:
For the 18 months I've owned this '07 S40i , I've been getting the "Transmission Service Urgent" lite along with engine light and limp mode since I got the car.
Independent dealer I purchased the car from put a "new" transmission in it one week after I bought it.
One the weather warmed up, it started happening again.
Dealer says he can't find anything wrong with it. That's because he's not driving it on the highway for around an hour which is when it happens to me.
At the same spot, just about every day on my way to work.
I pull into the breakdown lane. Turn of the car. Take the key out and wait maybe ten minutes.
Start it up and off I go. Red light is gone. Check Engine light stays lit. This happens just about everymorning. I've put almost 40k miles on it like this.
The curious thing is, it almost never does it when the temperature is below 40-50 degrees, so it hasn't happened more than once since last fall.
Now it's April and starting to warm up so I'm stressed knowing that it's going to start over again.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with heat. The temperature. I'm thinking of having the local independent Volvo guru change the fluid and anything else (filters, software, etc.) that won't cost too much. He's already told me that these transmission can't be worked on; just swapped out for a rebuild or new one for around 3 thousand dollars.
I'm paying off a 9000 dollar loan for what's basically a 3000 dollar broken car, BUT, I have put almost 40k miles on it since I bought it 18 months ago.
I can't really say the car doesn't work but it's not what I had in mind when I took out a loan for a $9,000.00 low mileage new-looking Volvo. I could've got myself a problem car for a lot less than that.
Any ideas?
Why does it only happen in warm weather, at the same place on the highway as I'm going up an incline after the same amount of time (35-45 minutes)?
Is there a cooling line that could be not working right or something like that.
I'm afraid to go over 60 mph on the highway. It's never happened just driving around town.
I've another $6,000.00/ 2-1/2 years to go and I'm never gonna have the $3,000.00 to spend on a new tranny for an 11 year old car which now has 114,000 miles on it. It had 77,000 when I bought and it looked brand new. The second day I had it, I took a "sunday drive" and just before I got home (maybe a seventy mile trip) the "Transmission Service Urgent" light came on and that's been my life ever since. Ridiculous! I'll never buy a non-Asian car again. This is my fourth Volvo and it's just a joke. I can't even work on it and I can't very well trade it in with a know tranny problem and 6 grand under water!
Anyone heard of anything like this. All I see is stories of people having the same problem and either paying the money to fix it or getting rid of it, but not someone getting another 40 thousand miles out of it, just having to give it a ten minute rest every morning on the way to work.
Thanks

I wonder if the trans is overheating? Check the trans lines into the cooler on the radiator. If it's only when warm and only after a long uphill pull you may need an extra trans cooler. Just a guess.
