Default 2008 s40 t5 timing problem

Hello everyone! My name is Mike Byrd and my wife has a s40 t5.
I have had the head surfaced and a valve job done. I installed a new head gasket and torqued to spec. I have looked on here at tutorials on setting the timing and didnt find any thing that relates to what im running in to.

I have two questions
1 Why would the VVT hubs not move on the cam?

2 do they lock some how? Can I unlock some how or do they need locking?

3 I never removed the gears from the cams but didn't mark them will it be in time still? I have tried to start the car but it wouldn't start. I placed the cam lock tool on the cams and all the timing marks were lined up.
I tested the compression and it has around 135 each cylinder.
I also verified there was fuel and spark.

when i tried to start it it sounded like the combustion was in the exhaust and
smoke came out of the oil fill.

Both of the cams are vvt and i haven't seen a picture of the vvt hubs on here like the ones i have. The pistons didn't hit the valves and everything seems like it should work.

4 Will it give a code having not run?

I hope this is not repetitive and thanks to anyone who is willing to help.

did you double check the cam timing marks/crank pulley just to make sure you are not one notch off? As a general rule after doing a timing belt or head gasket I turn the block by hand to make sure there's no interference and recheck the marks. If you didn't remove the VVT pulley they shouldn't need a reset but there can be some play when reinstalling the belt that can get you one notch. Still the car should start even if you are one notch off or if the VVTs are not adjusting the cam timing.

I checked the timing marks and they were dead on. I rotated the engine by hand several times and also had other mechanic buddies look at it and verified the marks.
this morning i tried to crank it again and the immobilizer message came on.
I flipped the key over and the message went off.
I pulled the plugs again and still had spark.
Is there anything i need to do to reset the ECU?
BTW my key fob doesn't unlock the doors after battery replacement.

Thanks a million for the reply MT6127
I will post what i find out tonight after work
