Advice needed - 05 S40 w/ 93K miles
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and need some advice on this model. I have owned an '03 S60 since 2006. The car has been excellent. I commute to work about 50 miles each way. No problems with the S60.
That said, my ex has asked for my advice on an S40 she is considering. She just totaled her Nissan Armada and is hoping to downsize to a more reliable, economical car. There is an '05 S40 (2.4 I) for sale locally for $7500. This comports with her budget, but she has no experience with Volvo. I have no experience with this model either. I just want to make certain that there are no known mechanical issues with this year and model before I offer my thoughts. Furthermore, this vehicle will be transporting my two children, so my first concern is safety and reliability.
I ask for your feedback as to whether this model represents a safe option and a good value. Thank you in advance for your input.
Regards,
Frank

Make sure she spends the money on a carfax report. It will alert you to any strange issues. I just bought a 2005 T5 and my carfax showed the car was previously wrecked. No big deal for me - air bags did not deploy, minor damage, etc. 2 days later I'm under the car fixing a jury-rigged power steering hose which led to finding a drywall screw that had been screwed through the condenser. lol. Get the report and run away from anything suspicious.
