Default Bad wheel plates

The back plates on my rear tires have become rusted and weak. I believe they need to be replaced.

1. What is the technical name for these plates, I think each tire has them?

2. Are they hard to replace? I mean do you have to remove the whole wheel to replace them?

I do not what to call these parts so I am not sure what to look for when I go to a Volvo parts website. I hope they are too much trouble to replace.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

Newport_j

I have a 2002 Volvo s40. It has a 1.9 liter turbo charged engine.

Do you mean the brake rotors? Yes they are fairly easy to replace, but the parking brake inside can be tricky.

Default Wheel plates

No I am sure it is not the rotors. That is the question that I asked the tow truck driver this morning and he clearly said it was not those.

You can see these plates when you look directly through the tire's inner wheel. They are visible through the holes in the wheel hub.

I think you mean the rear splash panels, also knows as disk guards or backing plates or dust shields (every place I see them online is calling them something different!). It is a thin metal plate right behind the rotors and they curve around the edge of the rotor a bit too. For the right side Volvo PN: 30814871

A bit pricey for OEM's but that is all I can find online... I would check a junk yard if I were to need to replace them.

They're called brake backing plates. You have to disassemble the brake rotor, brake caliper and wheel hub to replace them.

Backing plate, right: 30814871

Not sure I would bother. Mine rusted off three years ago and I ripped off the reminants to make sure they didn't get caught in anything. I've been considering replacing them but only if my bearing fail in which case I would have to go in there anyway.

I saw on the web these plates are being sold by Mitsubishi and they are about 2/3 the price of the 2002 Volvo s40 plates.

Is this legit?

The part numbers are:

MITSUBISHI MB928790
MITSUBISHI M814870

Any help appreciated. thanks in advance.
