i have a 2000 s40 2l with vvt and when the engine is warm it makes a knocking noise on the inlet side, almost like a clock ticking. the warmer it gets the louder the knocking. if i disconect the camshaft sensor or the camshaft actuator it stops making the noise. have replaced the actuator but made no difference. volvo suggested the alternator but iv taken the fan belt off and it makes no difference. down the 2 wires to the actuator, one is live and the other pulses an earth, and the knocking noise is in time with the pulses. HELP!

 

Someone may have the pulley not timed/positioned correctly.
