Default Battery Leak / Terminal Corrosion Problems?

Anyone else had their battery leak acid down into tray, on frame rail then onto back of trans for no apparent reason? No malfunctions other than flashing some computer to get heat to work but found this changing the oil today. All the ground terminals near the strut towers have signs of corrosion starting already. The battery tie down rod is fully coated in corrosion. This car is only on 5900 miles. WTF?............

The Volvo batteries are known to be full and overflow some acid.
The charging system boils the battery and overflows it.

Is this something that happens initially or on regular basis? I've been checking it & haven't caught it actually wet but it made a nasty mess whenever it did do it. I'm thinking about taking it to dealer & at least having them swap out battery tray & tie down rod & not touch the battery if it's done doing this. No need for the head start on rust problem

I agree. Another thing that adds to it is when they service the car and check the battery. Most people will over fill it and that makes it leak as well.

Taking in to see what dealer will do about it. Talked to the service manager & sales guy while picking up part for my mazda yesterday(same side by side dealerships) & made appointment to bring it in 1st thing Sat a.m. They seemed perplexed & concerned but we'll see what comes of it...........

Seems as though there was a missing vent tube on the battery they say. ????? Got new vent tube, tray & tie down & they supposedly cleaned up the other crap. Going to pick it up later so we'll see...........

Negative....As always I'm not impressed with dealer repairs. They say they replaced battery tray & vent tube & cleaned up area with anti-corrosion cleaner. I say bull****. Yeah they sprayed some **** in an attempt to clean up area but just made different mess . The battery tray now has some stupid black **** sprayed on it like undercoating . If they replaced the tray there would be no need for that. Tehy're just trying to cover up not actually changing it & making it where you won't notice it rotting away underneath it. Overspray of that **** is on other things now. The paint is gone where the acid got on the blue paint on the frame rail so it is bare metal with nice rust coating starting. Just lame *** crap. When I get something back from any shop that does auto repair every day & has facilities to do so, I fully expect to not be able to tell anything ever happened(especially with no structural repair) I expect good as new. If they can't do that then they shouldn't be in business to do so. So it will go to a different dealer that is Volvo only dealership to see what they think of this 1/2 *** attempt at a seemingly simple cleanup & repair job. Heaven forbid the other jerkoffs had to do anything related to the car functioning properly.

I can't believe I'm replying to an 18-year old thread!

I have a 2004.5 S40 and realized that the battery has a nipple for a vent tube, but the car doesn't seem to have one. I looked at Volvo parts (at Tasca and other sites) and no battery vent tube comes up as a listed part. Did Volvo intend for the battery to not have a vent tube? If it did, where should I run the vent tube? Is there a place in the body intended for the vent tube to exit the car? Thanks in advance for your help!
