Broken rear suspension springs 2000 s40

Just went out to look at the rear brakes on my Wifes 2002 s40 (inside pad is nearly gone one both sides) and low and behold, the bottom of the drivers side spring is broken. Looks like it has been like this forever.
Cost of the springs (I will do the install, just did my Saab rears and these look about the same difficulty)? Easy as it looks? Where should I order them from? Should I bother, looks like it has been this way since we bought it 2.3 years ago.
Also why is one pad 99% gone and the other say 80% gone?

It is never a good idea to drive around with broken suspension components. They are pretty easy to replace, especially if you have done springs before.
I think it is fairly normal to have the pads wear a little uneven. However, when you do the brakes, make sure all the sliding surfaces and guides are clean. You might need to use a small wire brush or sand paper to clean the crud away.

Does the V40/S40 rear coil spring really need to get fixed?
Like the @PoisonBeef above, my 2001 V40 has a broken rear coil spring on the driver side. Almost identical to his case, it broke at the very bottom, very close to the coil spring seat and has been broken for a long time (perhaps 30,000km ago in which my car now has 160,000km). Despite so, the rest of the coil spring managed to re-seat itself, although the coil spring does curl in the center causing it to rub against the strut. Due to this curling, the inner rubber sleeve that covers the top portion of the strut is ripped causing the inter shock to be exposed (on backside of picture below).
How dangerous is this? Should I get it fixed? My logic is that since nothing has happened in the last 30,000km, I could leave it alone.

Get it fixed my friend. It will work fine until you have a desperate need for an emergency stop. If the suspension is not the same on both sides you run the risk of veering to one side, swaying, loosing traction, etc. Easy to replace. Just borrow some spring compressors and do a quick onlinecsearch forvimstmructions. If you need some help I could probably send you the vida instructions. The only complication to that job is the potential for a rusted bottom bolt.
