My S40 has 2 of 3 lights out behind a/c panel in center of dash. After taking faceplate and **** surrounds off, discovered bulbs are replaced from behind! I'm guessing the practical fix is to use the courtesy light after dark, but would welcome any advice.

You should be able to slide it out and replace the bulbs if it won't come out then remove the radio and radio box and it will come out.

 

yea its a easy replace...
i replaced mine with some sexy blue leds cause the oem lights where to boring..lol

 

can that be done on a 1996 960 also?my A/C **** light is out also.

 

ya, it's not very hard to take apart the front section of the dash, you should be able to get to the lights just pulling out the stereo, i just got done putting mine back together.
