Cam Seals
Thanks for all the help that I have aready received on this forum... especially Tech, Volvotechky.
My question this time concernschanging the cam seals on a 2000 S40 (160300 miles). I was changing the oil and doing some manitenance and I noticed some oil on the cam pulleys and on the belt. I looked a little further and it's almost certainly the cam seals. I would like to do this (change the cam seals) myself, but I don'thave the tool that holds the camshafts (9995452) and aligns the crankshaft (9995451). My concern is with the variable valve timing and that even if I line and mark up the camshafts with the pulleys that I will not get it completely correct when I assemble it. I know that I have asked questions about the VVT units before, but I am still a little in the dark about what will happen if I take one of these units off the camshaft - does it slipor will it slide out of alignment, anything to be concerned about? Anybody ever done one of these?
Also, I am really concerned about this problem. I am not sure how long that this leak has been occuring, but I am afraid that with this oil on the timing belt that the belt will slip off or that the belt will weaken and break prematurely. Clearly, this is a problem that needs to be resolved, but how acute is this problem?
Thanks again for any advice that you all have, it is appreciated very much.

The reason you have to fully reset it according to the specs by what the Dealers says is because the pulley moves in 2 different directions and the Camshaft isn't keyed or notched to hold the pulley.
You can try removing the belt mark the middle rest position before removing the belt.
The turn it all the way foward and mark it then turn all the way back and mark again.
That should get you close enough to have it in time.
You should really buy the rear cam lock tool though!!! You will need to hold the cams in the locked position to have it all set right.
