Default Starting woes

My wife is getting frustrated with her 2001 S40. We call it her diva car since the parts are so $$.

Our latest issue is the car not starting. Lights and everything come on, but engine doesn't turn over. Turn it completely off and back on again and it'll usually start on the 2nd try.

Reading the forum, this looks to be a pretty common problem. The volvo dealership just called about 30 minutes ago and said we had to replace the battery with a new Volvo battery ($167.50) to fix this problem. I'm inclined to let them start there since that is probably less expensive than what they'd want for the fuel pump or the fuel pressure regulator.

Does this sound reasonable to anyone? What about the price? The Volvo dealerships around here are insane about "must be Volvo parts or doom awaits". I've not seen any posts on the forum about: I put aftermarket X on it and the car blew up.

Thanks for any input in advance.

I didn't buy a Volvo battery...I bought one at Walmart. No problems so far.
