Default Can I rely on the dashboard's Service Reminder indicator

I'm having an old S40. Normally I do the servicing and regular oil changing and stuff once after every 5000km. However recently I found out that dashboard got a service reminder indicator. So now I've passed the 5000km limit and still driving to see the service indicator light. Now its reaching 6000km still can't see anything.
Can I rely on this method? or shall I stick to the old 5000km limit.

I believe that the default is set at 7,500 miles. You can get the dealership to customize or do it yourself if you have access to vida/dice. having said this, I tried and wasn't able to.

If the car is calibrated on kilometers then 7500 miles = 12000 kilometers.

My V40 2002 is set to 7,500km and has displayed the service due light reliably each time that distance has been travelled. (thats a fraction under 5,000miles)

So can that amount of KMs be adjusted to 5000km or custom?
Because I like to do the servicing once after 5000km.
Also is it safe to travel 7500km without servicing?

Just use quality oil and you will have no problem.

From Volvo:

Changing oil and oil filter
Oil and oil filter changes should be made at 7,500 mile (12,000 km) intervals.
Extra oil additives must not be used unless advised by an authorized Volvo retailer. Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is changed at the normal maintenance service intervals.

Default is 7,500 miles or 12 months or 750 engine hours.

It should be able to be changed by the dealer.
