Car won't start; Stuck in Park
Good Morning Folks -
Long story, lots of questions regarding 2006 Volvo S40 2.4li. TLDR - The car will not turn over, and it is stuck in park.
Drove car approximately 30 miles to work at highway speeds. No noticed issues. Car sat for an hour, and then I to run a short, in town, errand. On the way back the AC quit working, and I noticed an odd hum from the engine. Upon return to work I noticed an electrical burning smell, and smoke was coming from the AC compressor. Nothing to be done at that moment so the car sat for another two hours.
Upon return, the car was completely dead. No lights, no whistles, no bells. I connected it, via charging cables, to another vehicle and let it charge for about an hour and a half. All the electrics (radio, lights, etc.) work just fine, but the car will not turn over; a single click is all I hear.
Lastly, the car does not come out of Park. Not sure if this is the dreaded "immobilizer" as there are no warnings, and the key turns just as it always has in the past.
I am fairly certian my AC compressor is shot, but would that lead to this rapid a cascade of events, or is there more to this in the opinion of this forum?
Any input will be appreciated, and thank you in advance for your advice.

sounds like your serpentine belt may be broken and not spinning the alternator or the alternator is what froze. Give that a check first. As far as the shifter goes - does your model have a shift lock release button? Check the owners manual. Also give the steering wheel a slight turn as it may be cocked and pressing on the interlock.
