Default CD stuck - 2003 S40

I'm helping a neighbor of mine with their 2003 S40 that has a CD that will not eject. It makes clicking noises like it's preparing to eject but the disc stays put. Playback still works fine so I'm guessing the ejection mechanism is on its way out.

I've found some replacement stereo/tape/CD units (model HU-615) on ebay and got to thinking that since everything but the CD player works fine if I could get away with just replacing the CD player itself. It seems like 2004-2007 S40s came with separate CD player units that sort of look like ones in tower PCs, but nothing on ebay for 2003s.

So if possible to replace just the CD player does anyone know a part # I could look up on ebay? Are there any other sites where I could possibly find a replacement stereo unit? Or even a guide to possibly repair it?

Thank you.

If you're "going on in" to swap the CD mechanism, why not go a little farther? The ACTUAL reason it's not ejecting is some sheared pin or perhaps merely hardened grease. On a similar scale, I rebuilt the 2006 key fob latch for the blade key. It works fine now, and I have a special fondness for the little fob now...

I'm not too experienced in messing with the internals of a CD player to know what to look for or how to repair. I was hoping it was a common enough problem this many years out that there might be a how-to guide somewhere.

I haven't had to go that deep into the CD changer, thank goodness, but I suspect that Volvo's don't evince the same level of standardization as PC's. My general theory is "If it doesn't work now, what have I got to lose by taking it apart?" Sometimes it pays off, and sometimes...

The fact that it's making appropriate noises suggests that if you could actually look at the mechanism, you might spot the bit of crud that is causing the problem. This would be easier if the CD changer could be cycled while you have it apart, and that is problematic in Volvo's.

Default CD stuck on S40?

A few ideas - see if you can help the CD out with a flat blade - sometimes the edge of the cd is catching on the way out. Next would be to open the CD player to see if you can help it out (assuming you want to keep that CD). Swapping radios on the S40 is really simple - to remove the radio press on the two vertical tabs on the outside edge so they release out, then slide the radio out. You can then pull out the antenna cable and disconnect the pin connector.

If you decide to replace the radio with one of the $50 used items on ebay, just make sure it comes with the code. Not sure if your particular model supports the remote CD changer, but it if does, you can buy an MP3 player adaptor for about $100 that plugs right into the factory harness. Also check ebay for other Volvo radio models in the "double DIN" size. They should all slide right in. I dropped an sc-816 in my S40 (no cd on factory radio). The Sc-901 on the C70s is a nice unit too..
