I have talked to our local dealership about doing a tranny service on my 2002 S40 and the Tech said it was not necessary until 100,000 miles.Sounds like a Lo-o-o-ong time to me, but they are supposed to know. Maybe "our"Tech has more updated knowledge. BJ

Volvo reccomends about 100,000 miles.

Some do it earilier and some later. It all depends on what you want.

If you flush then you will need 15 Quarts. If you just drain and refill from the drain plug about 3 to 4 Quarts.

I ordered a case of 12 quarts from Mobil. I have a 2001 S40 with the 2/3 flareup going on. Are you saying this is not enough??

12 should be fine.
Make sure if looks clean towards the end. As long as it looks like new fluid you will be fine. If not then you will still have most of the old stuff out and it won't hurt anything.

Like Tech said. Also to reinforce. The fluid is NOT synthetic. Dealers unknowlingly sell it as "synthetic" there is absolutely NO evidence it is. It is JWS 3309 oil spec, and that is Mobil 3309 available from any Mobil distributor for $46.50 for 12 quarts. The Volvo fluid is NOT special. Only their price is.
Just drain and fill, and run around the block to mix it up with the Torque converter. Do three times and you are good for 50K.
Only about 3.2 quarts come out during a drain, the rest is in the converter. I hope you will notice a difference after doing it. Good luck.
