Code confusion
Hi All,
I have driven Volvos for the past 40 years and done most of the maintenance and fixing myself. Today I'm confused and hoping for help from the many smart people who inhabit this forum. I have 2 Volvos in the barn at present: a black 2001 v70 t5m, and his grey kid sister, a 2005 s40 t5m.
The s40 has missed under power several times recently so I went looking for codes. Using the car's own "hidden menu" I see DTCs set in the BCM, ECM, CEM, and CCM. No detail of course.
My shiny new Foxwell NT301 scanner, for which I paid far too much, assures me that "no DTCs set in this module". It seems to read only what is available using the CAN EXD FAST protocol. But why can't I find the codes? The scanner seems to find tons of other information, but not what I want.
I'm new to this forum, but old enough to miss something obvious. Please throw me a line!
Thanks,
hillhiker

Oh I know a real setup is not cost effective. There are plenty of people who use the knockoffs though. "High quality" scanner or not the fact is it isn't working. A working knockoff will do more than any aftermarket scanner. And I doubt that is a "high quality" scanner since its pretty cheap.

Is it possible that I was interrogating the wrong module? I couldn't find any way to focus its attention on the ECM or CEM.

I haven't used that scanner, so I really don't know how it works. Most are pretty self explanatory. Maybe it is just an issue with that scanner and they'll ship you another.
I understand not wanting to use pirated software. But VIDA is hands down the best option and the cost for a legit copy is not worth it for a DIYer. Other comprehensive scanners can easily run into the thousands as well.

Hi All,
I just read a post from Sticky and understand that my question does not belong on the New Member's forum. Probably General Volvo Chat would be better. Is there any way to move the thread there? I will start checking that forum for new replies.
