cold start problem
I have a 2001 volvo s40. When i go to start the car in the morning or after the car has sat for awhile i have to press the gas pedal down in order for the car to start. Once the car is started it runs fine with no mis fires or any other problems.
Thanks for any help you might have to offer

Sounds like either a bad fuel pressure regulator or the hose going to the regulator.
The regulator is under the plastic cover over the throttle body.
If you remove the cover the fuel pressure regulator is on the end of the fuel rail.
Remove the vaccum line from the regulator. If some gas comes out then it is bad.

The FPR is the black plastic piece in this picture. The red circle is where the fuel line connects from the gas tank. I agree with tech on the FPR being the problem.

Hi Guys, i do face the same problem as well.. just send my car to Fletcher's for a check.. but they need more time to determind what is the root cause for it.. they say may be the FUEL PUMP problem.. is that true??
My 2001 Volvo S40 has the same start issues. So far my mechanic has replaced the Fuel Presser Regulator, the Throttle Control Valve, and the Alternator (in reverse order). It still exhibits the same symptoms intermittently, but usually won't do it at the mechanic's shop. I have read that moisture in the ignition system can be the culprit, so I'm trying to watch for a pattern that connects the problem to damp days.
My mechanic said to wait until it fails everytime I try to start and then bring it back.
In the meantime, I try to always hold the key in the Start position for several seconds - this usually lets me avoid hitting the gas.

after 2 days at Fletchers, the tech cant figure out what is the root cause of the problem.. they mention tat my fuel pressure regulator is good, fuel pump is good.. sparks plugs is good.. in short, all seem to be good..
so what should be my next step?? should iinsist on changing the fuel pressure regulator?? Fletchers quote me $198 for the change..(include labour + part)
Is it worth it?Or should i send my car to VOLVO and check it out??
Need some advice.. Thanks alot !
