Crazy Wipers!
hi all,
new to the forum, I know that this thread is old just wanted to reply to the issue about wiper motors and HID kits. I have a 07 s40. My wipers just recently stopped working. I have had my HID Kit hooked up for about a month. Looks like this is what made the wiper motor go. The way I hooked them up was with the ballasts and the code eliminators. I definatly had to use the code elimnators to get the hids to stay on, In the process of trying to get the hid to work I ordered a wiring harness that allows the hids to connect directly to the battery, I did not use it in my installation becasue the lights were working fine without it. Looks like I should have used since the wiper motor is now blown,. Pretty expensive repairs just to have some hids on the car. When I get fixed I dont think I am going to run the risk again with the hids probably going to go back to stock, Just wanted to get this info out there since it looks like same problem for most.

So - I had installed HID's in my 2005 S40 and messed around with fusing like a mad-man before I discovered that there were simple code eliminators that would solve the problem. After torching one wiper motor and the entire ECM (thank god we had warranty - 2400 BUCKS) I installed the HID's with error eliminator and left fusing the same... changed several fuses in passenger footwell fuse compartment to at least 5 to 10, sometimes 15 amps higher. I drove that car for over a year (15 months without a problem). Then I burned a bulb out. Ordered new bulbs and still no problems. Had the new stuff in for about a month then decided it was time to upgrade and bought a 2007 V50. Switched out the HID's at the dealership when we traded the S40 in and everything seemed good. Two days later, the wiper motor in the new V50 torches in the middle of a rainstorm. The dealer rapes me for around 500 bucks and I assume everything is good. We get another 5 days and the wipers start acting up again, but this time, when I turn the car off, they reset and act like everything is OK. Knowing this problem is related to HID's, I remembered I had changed the fusing throughout the vehicle on my S40. SO, I changed a few fuses to only 5 amps higher, and the wipers still turn on by themselves on occasion. Next, I tried the Harness that connects the HID's directly to the battery. This solved the wiper problem, but then I had problems with the "low beam failure" light and one of the HID's was out. I'm at a loss and kind of pissed off because they worked SO PERFECTLY on my 05 S40 for so long and all I did differently was change fusing. Could this possibly be that the two cars have different electrical options and packages, ex: fog lights, trip computer, premium stereo, etc.? Should I up the fuses I changed a bit more, maybe 10 amps over OEM? I'm just worried, because I don't want to torch another wiper motor, and I REALLY don't want to blow the ECM again. I just want brighter, safer headlights. Anyone with help on the issue would sure be appreciated.
i had the same issue damm hid lights.. i went to a salvage yard got a used one for 25 bucks.. the power spike is the cause of it... volvo told me if it was not factory installed not to add it..
