Default 240 wipers: motor runs, wipers don't move

The windshield wipers have stopped working on my 1992 240. The fuse at position #2 controls the wipers and horn. The horn still works, and I can hear the alternating sound of the wiper motor operating when they are switched "on". However, the wiper arms do not move at all. The arms can be moved freely by hand, and if you move one by hand, then both wiper arms move together (although not due to the motor, just due to hand operation).

Suggestions for diagnosis and repair? Where do I start? Has something in the linkage or the motor come loose?

Looking at a diagram....you might have a

1) wiper motor defect on a gear

2) bolt/clip that attaches to the "Drive link" is come undone or missing

it goes like this....Motor with 3 inch shaft connects to the first Drive link....
Drive link to right side wiper
Parallel drive link (second one) connect to driver wiper...

held together by clips or nuts and clips....

I think you got to dig in there and see if the first link connected to the motor is missing it's clips or nuts.....

Thanks. The wiper arms do move in unison manually. Does this suggest which of the possible links/connections is the cause?

Is access only via the glovebox, or is there a reason to remove the motor for access as well?

Do you have a link/URL to a diagram?

I have a book that I bought on ebay....Chilton...the old school one and not the new one...9 dollars....

So your problem is the link that attaches to the motor...behind the glovebox......
In case you need to do the hole procedure here are the instructions..

NOTE: This procedure includes wiper drive link removal and installation
1: Disconnect the negative battery cable
2: Remove the right side-panel and remove the panel under the dashboard (beneath the glovebox).
3: Remove the defroster hoses and remove the glove box
4: Remove the wiper arms
5: Disconnect the wiper assembly and lift it out through the glove box opening.
6: Reverse the above procedure to install.

Problem solved. Removed the glovebox and the passenger-side defroster hose and found that the spring clip holding the linkage to the wiper motor had cracked and fallen off. One new clip and it's good to go.

Thanks for the help!
