CV Joints /Axles '05 S40 M/T
Hi all, and Happy New Year...
Just wonder if anyone with a 2005+ S40 has been in the situation I face now....I've got 141K on my '05...put in new struts a little while ago and the ride is a bit smoother (Hey, it ain't a Rolls, but it's OK), but now I'm hearing some noises from my CV joint, pass. side...Normally not a big deal to get an aftermarket axle replacement (EMPI, DTA) for around $100. Problem is that my car is a FWD 5 sp. M/T, and the parts are different vs. for an A/T .... "swedishautoparts" used to advertise some aftermarket products for Volvo #36000546 and 36000555 (driver- and pass. sides, respectively, OEM's at around $400 a pop!), but no more.....No luck just finding CV Joints either, just complete axles for A/T or AWD models. There appear to be some good deals out there to send them out for "rebuilding"....but if possible, I'd prefer "new" (and I can't have my car laid up for 4 or 5 days while things get shipped back and forth across the country)
Has anyone had any luck finding an aftermarket brand (axles, or just the CV joints) for M/T models? ....I'm assuming that the CV joints themselves are the same, whether for an A/T or an M/T, so - if nobody can suggest where to get the CVJ's - I was thinking of just buying the EMPI's or DTA's for an A/T model, pulling off their (new) CV joints, and swapping them for what's on my (old) axle now...Question is, has anybody out there done something like this?
Thanks,
Andy B

I see Different part numbers for MTs and Auto axles. When you say CV joints, do you mean the joint in the axle or the whole part? Did a quick look around at my favorite sites (FCP Euro, EEUROPARTS, Tascaparts.com and volvopartswarehouse.com) It looks like the axles are the same for S30/S40/V50 (and possibly S60) for 04s to '10 or so. Most aftermarket rebuilds are for ATs - FCP lists a rebuild for manuals but says they are currently not available so it may be worth a call or two or consider going used. (Shop car-parts.com).
