Before you bolt down the cams you rotate the crank to line up the mark on the crank gear with the mark on the engine block. This puts all the pistons down in the bores so they do not strike the open valves when you bolt down/rotate the cams.
Then you line up the marks on the cam gears with the cuts on the plastic cam guard (the black plastic engine beauty cover thats over the cam gears).
Now the engine is ready to receive the timing belt. You may need to hold the cams in place as they may move from the pressure of the open valves on a cam lobe.
