Default can it be driven with bent valves

Hey guys,

just a theoretical question.... that happen to be not-so-theoretical to me

I've been told so many lies lately, I stopped believing myself.

Today the guy at the shop that I called to get a quote for my never ending repairs. "if your timing was messed up i.e. timing gear was installed incorrectly - you could have bent some valves" I recalled Hudini saying something in that effect, but I always have the picture in my mind of valves hitting the head and therefore bending the stems and destroying the head. The guy says "No, if you ask mechanic that knows Volvos, they'll tell - you can bend the valves without having them hit the head"
Anyone with this unfortunate experience - please chime in.
Thanks!

Thanks Lifesgoodhere!

So if it was 5 degrees or more off, I'd hear it and it would not run at all I assume. This thing is actually running "fine" if it wouldn't be for the morning "can't get it going" syndrome. Not always, but most morning it has a very hard time accelerating like someone attached a boat anchor to it and wouldn't let it go until it warms up. Once it gets going it's running fine, not counting that "under load" vibration that I was never been able to figure out.

The cvvt adjusts 5 degrees or so ither way from static setting (5 degrees is about one maybe 2 tooth) so if the static timing is off one tooth, Cvvt will adjust to compensate and cast a hard start rough run issue.

My bent valves were caused by a slipped timing belt. It slipped many teeth. Now when I put it back together and my CVVT gear was off a few degrees, it would take noticeably longer to start. It was slightly down on power too. On the 2nd start after resetting the check engine light it would illuminate again with the same code.

Thanks Hudini,

Mine wasn't bad enough to bent the valve and it drove actually fine'ish after it warmed up, but the CEL still would come up right after I reset it, just like yours. Now when competent people has done the setting of the timing and aligned the gear like they were suppose to. All is fine - runs good, no CEL - finally
