Default engine rebuilt project ????

so after long consideration and peoples's suggestions : I have decided to rebuild the engine for my 07 s40 2.4 non turbo ..

for what its worth ! I have a new roommate which contends to have experience doing engines .. he is telling me just clean up the cylinders walls (hone the walls) clean pistons and other components with CHEM DIP carburator parts cleaner real good) , IF that is the case which wont require proffesionaly bore cylinders , new pistons , bearings..!!!

if the BLOCK ITS NOT so bad .. can i safely re-use everything providing i get new RINGS or should i get over size rings ? sorry just have never done a complete tear down or rebuilt - this will be my first
I think i m looking forward to the experience lol..

suggestions advise greatly appretiate it

i can also provide some pictures if any body is interested of what it looks like ??

It's one thing to "freshen up" a perfectly good engine with new rings and bearings, etc. But if there's ANYTHING going on with the engine, you HAVE to have the machining done (and use the appropriately under/oversize bearings and rings.

Don't purchase oversize rings. You do realize that rings, rod bearings and maybe a valve job is not an "engine rebuild". That's a take apart and put a few parts into. - And hopefully when you get it back together a few months from now - it will still run.

So the question is - why do you think you need to "rebuild" your engine. And given you have no experience - you are not picking a simple engine to mess with. Do you have a garage to work on this project? Do you have all the tools you might need? Do you have the special tools needed? What exactly did you plan to do? Do you have the service manual? Or are you just watching you-tube vidoes? Pull the engine and transmission, preferably from the bottom, dismantle the engine and do exactly what to it?

Buy a used engine, put it in, and try to get that one to run - unless it's a toy, you have extra money to throw away and maybe it's a personal challenge. But don't expect the car to run again if you attempt to "rebuild" and get running a 5 cylinder volvo engine with no experience. At this point you also have no idea if the transmission even works> that happens - happened to me. Customer tows in their 262 crown coupe (a long time ago) has me put in a factory remanufactured v-6 in their 260 crown coupe. (pays cash up front) Many thousands of $$$. New engine starts and runs beautifully - but the transmission was bad, car would not move - they were not happy.

Do you need this car for transportation or is it a toy that won't matter if it never runs again? Sorry just trying to be realistic here - I have seen many dreams such as this die - and end up being a basket case, a pile of parts taken apart by someone else, worth absolutely nothing. Then it's towed to me to fix. After my experience with the 260 crown coupe - I have to tell them (or their dad) Sorry - can't be done for what the car would be worth fixed.

history on car : purchased the car from an auction .. engine would NOT TURN AT ALL .. opened it up water got inside cylinders area I m thinking overheated " blown head gasket " superficially things DON'T LOOK BAD AT ALL - that is not saying valves maybe bend or leaking how will i go checking on that ?

what should look for as far as checking inspection ? is it possible water got inside pistons/cylinders area , car sat for a long time causing piston and cylinder walls to build so much rust that it seized ...

I get it hoonk! I got a feeling the transmission still good on it ..
I have NOT ruled out getting a used engine which are about 1000 plus shipping at least 200 what about if IT needs same t-belt, water pump , gaskets and such..still an expensive proposition

using the existing engine - if it the cylinder walls clean up pretty good ! could I use oem rings on these pistons and cylinders ?

and yes I have the garage , tools for the most part, manuals , volvo vida and other the car will actually be for my son and also a personal challenge project although at the moment he is driving a 2002 C70 which is not such great shape interior and body wise

almost feel as if i get a used engine i will be putting more money with less risk less return .
where if I DO the existing engine less money higher risk better return

I would enjoy the challenge if it were a personal car (in my younger years) - but there's no way I would spend that much time/effort on a 14 year old car for a customer. Enjoy!
