Here's my situation. My wife who doesn't work is thinking about a new car. Her 92 Civic(original owner) has 38k miles. We recently popped around some dealships and off lease places and she really likes the S40 Volvo. I have never owned a Volvo so I really don't have any opinion on them.

I looked at the Volvo site and the gas mileage on the 2.4 is well, pathetic. 18-24? for a 2.4l? Is that true? That's horrendous. My 3.5l 235h suv gets 18-21. Her Civic gets 35-40. I like the look of the vehicle but we've not driven it yet.

I would have thought that a 2.4 would get somewhere in the mid 20s for mileage.

I guess what I'm asking is; Is the s40 a car you would buy again at the price?

I own a 2001 S40 which has the 1.9L turbo engine. It gets 34 mpg highway. It runs pretty dad-gum well too. Now the 160mph speedo may be optimistic..... I would buy another of the 2000-2004.5 models with the 1.9L turbo. Of the newer ones, can't help. Is the wife set on a brand new car?

 

Who told you that? My 06 AWD gets 26mpg. And it's not broken in yet! Bought it new in Jan 08. Only have 4500 miles on it. On a highway run we got 28mpg.... A non turbo auto should get 30mpg on a highway run. Tom

 

The 2000 S40 1.9T I just got rid of got 24 city 35 highway consistently.
