Default Flashing immobilizer light - can’t start car

Aright, I’m getting very annoyed at my V40. I’m regularly getting a flashing immobilizer light when attempting to start the car. When this happens engine will not turn over. Eventually if I turn ignition on and off enough times it will start but it’s only a matter of time before I get stranded somewhere.

Has this happened to any of you?

So far I have:
1- cleaned contacts on ECM and immobilizer midlife
2- replaced immobilizer module with a used on from wreckyard
3 - unplugged replugged all ecm connectors to make sure all snapped back in.

Any suggestions?

Bad PNP switch contacts on shifter or antennae ring for ignition switch can cause this problem.

try doing a shifter row to see if that helps clean up the PNP contacts. Also make sure the shifter lock button isn't sticking.

Yes, rowing the shifter eventually fixes it. My V40 does this unexpectedly maybe 2 or 3 times a year and almost always in an embarrassing location. (i.e. gas station forecourt with a line of cars behind.)
Once the shifter locked up in P as well despite having foot on the brake pedal which prevents one being able to row the shifter.
It suddenly freed up after about 6 to 8 attempts and pumping the brake pedal as well.
Exceedingly frustrating.

I think the discussion is about two different issues - the park / neutral interlock will keep the car from starting, but you won't get an immobilizer warning light (green key symbol)… the starter just won't engage.

pierremcalpine, did you try different keys, or do you only have one key for the vehicle?

The locked up shifter only happened once which made it impossible to row the shifter lever. The immobilisor warning light and the starter not turning the engine over with the ignition switch are all exactly as the OP describes with his S40.

Yep, agree, two different issues. Mine definitely has the immobilizer light flashing. I originally though about the immobilizer ring but for whatever reason could not find a separate part # for it and assumed it was part of the ingnition barrel. I revisited this assumption this week and found the part #. Headed back to wreckyard and grabbed one (pain in the a$$ to access that philips screw!!! I’ve had a full day without issues. Will keep reporting back I’m hopeful I have addressed.

Looks like I may have fixed the issue. It’s now been several days with trouble free starting. Yahoooo!
