Flashing Recirculation and AC Light
Hey Guys,
I've been reading through most of the post for the S40 today and it seems you might be able to help me out.
Anyway, I have a 2000 S40 and sometimes when I go to crank it, the engine starts just fine with a little vibration (going to get my engine mounts checked in a little while). A few seconds later, both the recirculation and the AC lights blink amber simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds then everything is fine. The AC is on (green) while they are blinking, but the recirculation is off (amber). I took it to a mechanic today and had him run a diagnostic and it would not return an error for the blinking lights. He "said" Volvo doesn't disclose these types of errors to the public and I would have to take it to the dealership to have it checked out. I would like to avoid that if any way possible.
I was thinking it may be the cabin filter, because I have been getting a moldy smell lately. I also read a couple threads about how to get rid of that. It doesn't sound too easy. Or, could this be a warning that something big is about to happen?
Let me know what you think. This may be a new problem. I couldn't find it with a search through the threads.
Thank you in advance,
Anthony

did you happen to put the wrong kind of fluid in recently, by chance? Either way, the first thing you want to do before assuming the worst is to do a fluid refresh and see if it makes any difference.
Get yourself some CHF11 or 202 power steering fluid and a turkey baster. Remove as much fluid as you can from the reservoir and then refill with fresh. Turn on car, turn the wheel 10x from one extreme to the other. turn car off, take the baster back out and empty the reservoir again...do that until the fluid is nice and green/blue. If your steering is still crap, time to look at the pump or rack.

I suspect the pump has failed but there is one more remote possibility. The pressure hose could be clogged. You could remove the pressure hose and see if the pump stops making noise and pushing fluid out the top. It would be messy so maybe route the hose into a bucket or jar.
Still, if it's my dollars at stake I'd go get a used pump from the junkyard and give it a go.
