Default Front struts

Quick Question, I have a 2000 s40 and my front driver side strut went bad. I know I need to replace both a the same time, and I am having someone else do the work, but what exactly am I looking for? do I just need the strut assembly or do I need the dampers too, I see both online for sale and don"t know what i have to get. I just want my volvo back to normal so nothing special, just OEM is fine. Also, I was looking into a turbo upgrade come summer, and was wondering what Type of turbo I had and if a replacement would be better than say a few minor upgrades to get me around 200hp. Any help is appreciated.

I had my front struts replaced (2006 S40 T5) and did not have the dampers replaced at the same time.

I've replaced my front struts, mounts, and bearings on my 2001. Which part is the damper? Do you have a part number or exploded view from a website selling parts? Not trying to cause trouble. Maybe it's something I call a different name.

Be careful as the 2000 has parts that only fit the 2000 model year.

I agree with Hudini. I did the struts (basically a shock (damper) with a bracket and spring seat welded onto the body), springs and mounts in my 01. Maybe they're calling the mounts or coil springs, dampers? It'd be a misnomer in my eyes but I dunno. Just a thought. You could also post the link to the site that listed the 'dampers' so we can take a look at them….

If by damper you mean the shock then the strut assembly is the shock, it just has the lower spring seat welded to it.
Make sure you get the right parts because the strut up to 04/2000 (phase 1) is different from the 05/2000 and on (phase 2). Actually if you are willing to upgrade get the strut, spring, springseat, bearing, strutmount and swaybar endlinks from a "05/2000 and on" and you are updated to phase 2. To make it easier searching for parts you can search for 2001 parts if you want phase 2, they are the same from 05/2000 -2004.
I just did the upgrade, I can look for the part #'s once I'm back home if you're interested.

I would recommend replacing the top strut mount/bearing. These are known to go bad on these cars.

thnx, i will look into the upgrade, wasn't sure if I wanted to spend too much now as I may be buying a new S40 come end of summer. But if I don't repair and don"t buy new then I am left in the cold. LOL. appreciate the input.
