On that note, is there something special about this regulator that makes it cost over $200? I don't see any wiring that goes to it in the picture (haven't looked on my car to verify this).
If I were to buy an aftermarket FPR, is the rate of fuel pressure rise so very different on these cars that an aftermarket one wouldn't work? I've just got problems spending over $200 on something so simple as a freaking FPR...
I am pretty sure you can buy just the insert (not the whole plastic piece) and replace just that. That would be much cheaper, about $100 maybe. But you would have to look for 2003 or 2004 s/v40 regulator i think because 2000-2002 only comes with housing.

I changed the fuel filter, air filter spark plugs. Problem remains. I took it to the auto shop they tested the battery and said it was fine, But said the alternator is on it's way out.
But I have been reading on here it may be the fuel regulator. So What do you guys think?

Sounds like the same problem as my 00 S40. Does yours jump while idling sometimes? I'll be replacing the FPR tomorrow on the condition that my local junkyard has one in stock. I'll report back.

Very rarely does it jump while idling once in a blue moon.
Can someone post a link to purchase that S-Shaped Vacuum hose here in the USA? The part I bought did not come with it (although it showed it online connected to the FPR when I bought it), and seems silly to me not to replace that part after spending $125 for the new FPR. Cannot find it anywhere.
What is the hose next to the Fuel Pressure Regulator?
I was checking out my fuel pressure regulator (which I think needs to be replaced). I found that the long black hose (which is vertical and to the immediate right of the FPR in the Hudini's picture) isn't solidly connected to anything. It slips into a hole right below the FPR but one can pull it easily. What is this hose and is it supposed to be solidly connected? I can't find it identified anywhere. Thanks in advance.
Followup: As long as someone knowledgeable is responding, can you also tell me what the hose is that is to left of FPR in the picture (it's hard to see).

Stole this from Andy. The red circle is where the fuel line connects to the fuel pressure regulator. The FPR is the black plastic piece that is held to the end of the fuel rail by one bolt. The rubber elbow connects to the vacuum source and is just out of the picture below the FPR. As said above, this is covered with a black plastic piece. Attachment 24149

Thanks, but that's not the one. I took two pictures, showing the hose in and out (there's nothing holding it in except for gravity -- the car runs fine once it starts). This is just to the right of the fuel pressure regulator, that you can see on the left.

That is the infamous brake vacuum hose. I say infamous because it has a check valve at the other end and when the check valve fails you get crappy breaking for the first minute or two when driving in cold weather. It should snap back into place with a plastic ring that is either green or red.
Separately, I'm now waiting for a multispline screw extractor to arrive in the mail. Whomever installed the old FPR appears to have stripped the screw. It appears to be a hex screw, but none of my hex bits fit into it (not a 4mm, 4.5 mm, or 5mm. Even the standard sizes don't fit). Someone posted that it should be a T20 or T25 but that's not what I have on my 2001 S40.
So I bought the part today and replaced it, I bought it at advance auto parts for $113. It took me about 10 minutes to replace.
My first crank wasn't a good sign, It didn't crank right away. I'll give it a few more days and I'll keep updating.
You could also try taking your idle control valve out and cleaning it with brake cleaner to see if that makes a difference. That solved my long crank issues. Cheap, easy, low risk.
