Hey everyone I recently became the owner of a… well broken down 2008 s40 2.4i. The scanner picked up DTC codes p0336/339 p1719, p0420, and p0012. With the state that it’s in upon getting it I just want to engine swap it and make it a project car. I’m considering throwing in a j32a2 engine with its transmission as well. I was hoping to get some opinions on that and also some help on how I can get rid and fix those codes. I reset the codes and the only one to stay was the p1719. The car cranks but won’t start at all
Kind of a big leap to go from diagnosing CEL codes to planning an engine swap. have you checked the timing belt and cam timing? If the cam timing is correct, what does the compression look like? If the compression is good then its far cheaper to address the root causes of the CEL codes than to do a swap in a Honda J engine. For that effort you'd be better off getting this car to run then sell it off and buy a T5.
Since you have a no start, I'd consider checking cam timing and then compression - in case the engine slipped timing and dinged some valves. If that appears in order, then check the wiring/fuses etc and the crank position sensor. Your CEL list does show a cam sensor error but that may be related to a wrong signal from a crank sensor - besides I'm not sure if that would keep an engine from starting. The last code is the P0420 which is a cat efficiency code which is really all about emissions (means the rear O2 sensor is seeing too little O2 ) which can be caused by a failed cat or exhaust leak or intake air leaks etc. You can leave that one for last to solve as it doesn't impact how an engine starts or runs.

I haven’t checked the timing belt yet or done a compression test. I was planning to do the compression test just have to get the kit. And throwing in that engine would be after the car is fix and everything like the end goal basically. I’m also not fully set on the j35 I’ve also thought about the v8 from the s80 but I’ve seen so many people do it on here already. I just wanted something new. But ok back to fixing it. When I’m checking the timing belt and cam timing what exactly should I look for. This is the first car I’m working on so explain it as if you were being taught please. Once I do that I’ll report back and let you know.

OK, a reality check - A modern Volvo where all of the systems are talking to each other on a CANBUS -
WILL NOT be a good "first car I'm working on" project car.
Sure you can work on it but you will never get it to run with a different engine (well - that's actually not true - if you spend perhaps 10 or 20 times what the car could ever be worth - you might be able to get it to run, for who knows how long)
If you want a toy to "work on" - choose something else.
Older front engine American cars for something big, or maybe an old Mazda Miata for something small.
And If someone has actually put a Volvo v8 in a s40 - please post links to that!

I think any car is a good first car to work on. It’s called gaining knowledge from doing the work. The car was given to me free of charge to work on. If I **** up trying to get it to start then oh well. I’d rather build my own car doing my own **** than buying a car and not knowing what’s wrong with it.
