Head gasket replacement... and the many challenges on the way.
I’ve been tinkering with my daughters S40 in the pursuit of changing the head gasket, timing belt, water pump. I’ve spent a lot of time planning and researching and am knuckles deep in the process. I haven’t found and tutorials or blogs specifically on this car... 2005 S40 2.4i.
Watching videos on other, larger models, it looks so simply. Nothing about this model is simple. There is no space in this car. I’m guessing there is 1/2” space between the timing belt cover and the strut tower. It was a struggle just getting the accessory drive belts off.
I removed the two 10 mm bolts that hold the cover panel from under the crank pulley. From other videos this is how you find the timing mark on the crank and crank pulley. I’m not sure it is visible from any angle.
on the attached picture of the crank pulley, there is a “V” mark on the face of the pulley. There is also a small pin lined up with the “V” through the pulley and into the crank (I assume).
I have the cams lined up so that the cam alignment took could bolt on, with the slots lined up with the top of the head. With the cams aligned, it looks like this “V” straight up too. Coincidence? Or is this the top center mark since there is no other?
it seems the motor mount is going to need to be removed in order to get the timing belt cover off and in order to change the timing belt and water pump. You wanna talk about ten pounds of **** in a five pound bag! Eeesh!
Soooo... any model specific videos on the internet? Or any words of advise? I will beat this thing one way or the other. See attached pictures.
I meant to ask, if anyone has experience with this job, does the crank pulley need to be removed to do this? There are at least a couple bolts that look to be holding the timing belt cover to the block. Thing is, the pulley gets in the way of getting a socket on these bolts. I would guess it needs to be removed. Thoughts?
I removed mine to take a look at the seal. It's not difficult if you use a little heat and an impact wrench on the center nut. I didn't see a way to hold the crank from turning so you really need an impact wrench.
Thanks for the reply. I ended up giving up on the idea of pulling the crank pulley. I guess I just got antsy after awhile and just moved on.
I did get the motor mounts off. Crazy engineering. I was going to use an impact to remove these bolts but found you have to use a shallow socket on the bolts that thread into the motor and I was unable to get a 1/2” extension to clear the mount. I had to use a 3/8” drive and some *** to break it loose. I broke two sockets and broke one 3/8” extension in the process.
So I said, “the many challenges along the way”, right? Well, timing belt off and all cam cover bolts removed... I can’t get that thing off now! Any advise to pop the cover off?!
i have found a few posts on another forum and have read to use the head of a soft hammer (rubber mallet) but no luck. I’ve ready that when it does finally let loose there is an alarming about of pressure that will make the cover POP off. I’m guessing it might be wise to install the tool used to compress the cover to catch it when it does pop off.
Any suggestion on this next challenge? I’m having fun now. LOL
Thanks in advance!
Randy
