Has anyone replaced their alternator? If so, do you have any advice or tips?

Considering doing an alternator replacement myself on the 2005 S40. 92K miles with a sluggish start. Autozone computer indicates the alternator is going bad.

 

With a bad battery any alternator will show up as it doesnt do its job but its the battery.They wanna sell you one.Bad battery will not let the alternator run the voltage up and eventually will kill it.Replace the battery first.

 

Battery tested good with the engine off. When I turned the engine on the alternator tested poorly.

 

Thanks for the advice! Replaced the battery today, and the alternator now tests OK! I was skeptical of the Autozone tester, now I have confirmation.

 

Remove the old battery charger. Hold the charger if the store is the core charge payment. Put the new alternator and tighten the bolts just enough to maintain the alternator, but slow enough so you can scroll through the system of the charger.
