Default How to pry up and Remove Valve Cover?

Hey Everyone.

I need to remove my valve cover on my 2000 S40. I have all the bolts out, and I am going to remove my VVT exhaust cam gear (after installing my cam locking tool), but how do I pry up the valve cover after things are all clear? Volvo has a pry tool, but I do not have access to it. How to get around the Volvo pry tool and do it myself with another tool? Thanks.

I'm responding to my own post because I found a solution. Use a rubber mallet to gently strike the aluminium valve cover (vibrate it) as someone else uses at large screwdriver or other lever to pry up at one of the 3 or 4 tabs on the valve cover that are used to separate the 2 halves. Be gentle (do not break the aluminum pry tabs off) and work in stages. The vibration from the mallet will help the prying lever do the job. Try to do it once, then let the car sit, then try again a few minutes later. The light pounding by the mallet and the gentle prying pressure will free the 2 halves in time. Mine took 3 attempts over 30 minutes.

No. Did not break any of them. I just did not WANT to break one, so I had to think of a way for the pry bar to do it's job of prying better. Volvo has a special tool that is used for prying up the valve covers, but I did not have one. Anyway, it worked.
