Default I cannot keep the bright lights on

I recently discovered a problem in that I cannot keep my bright headlights on. When I move the switch on the steering column to the correct position the lights come on, but the switch on the steering column does not stay there. I have to hold there with my index finger. Of course, this makes driving very difficult having to hold the switch all the time.

What could be wrong and how do I correct it?

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What position do you have the headlight switch (dashboard left of instrument panel) in? The headlight switch must be in position before the high beams will function. If it is in the "0" position, that only turns on daytime running lights. Front and rear parking lights and license plate lights will also be on but highbeams will only flash when you pull on the stalk.
